  • First Schools' Football Festival

Mon 30 Jan 2023 Mrs Allen

It was our second festival held at the Wedmore Astro - this time the boys. Everyone arrived promptly and the matches got underway very quickly.

The year eight sports leaders were great ambassadors for Hugh Sexey- refereeing and coaching. The boys played in good spirits and a very exciting tournament was enjoyed by all.

The final result meant two schools drew on points - Weare and East Brent. It all came down to goal difference and the overall winners were Weare .

Thank you to all parents, carers and staff for their support and encouragement.

I was very proud of the year eight leaders who inspired the younger players and led by example.

  • Year 8 Boys' Football: HSMS vs Westfield Academy

Wed 18 Jan 2023 Mr McGrath

Match report – Hugh Sexeys vs Westfield Academy Football

On the 16th of January Hugh Sexey travelled to Westfield Academy, hoping to put in a strong performance and progress to the 4th round of the cup. After a long journey to Yeovil the boys seem optimistic that they could win. The early exchanges in the game suggested it was going to be a tight match. Westfield took the lead with a good header, however Hugh Sexey responded strongly, scoring immediately. George cooly took his chance and slotted the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box. After a frantic first half the players went into half time 4-2 down; Jacob having scored a good goal after neat interplay with Jack, George and Vincent.

The start of the second half saw the game run away from Hugh Sexey with Westfield taking a commanding 7-2 lead. Noah's introduction from the bench brought fresh impetuous and he was able to score a quick fire hattrick.  Unfortunately, the game ended 9-6. Both teams put up a great fight and it was a very end to end game as the score line tells. Special well done to the Year 7 boys who stepped in and did an unbelievable job. (Noah, Zak, Henry and Jack) Thank you to Westfield for hosting.

  • Year 5 Victorian Day at Coldharbour Mill.

Thu 12 Jan 2023 Mrs Maden

This week Year 5 have had the opportunity to visit Coldharbour Mill in Uffculme. The mill certainly lived up to its name as it was rather chilly in places as we toured around learning about the working conditions in 1865.

We had two aspects to our visit which included a digital tour where each child had a headset and device and visited various rooms within the mill and discovered how the machines were developed and other interesting facts. The other part involved a drama role-play where the children applied for a job at the mill and learned about what that would entail, including collecting what they used to fix the dye from the work-house and that some of the dyes were poisonous (made from arsenic) so they would need to be careful handling the green items.

Mr Robson, the Mill manager subjected the children to various tests such as dashing to the wall and back in order to evaluate how fast they could run and whether they could work underneath the machines running back and forth without being hit. The girls were advised that they would need to keep their hair hidden or cut it off for safety and they were all subjected to a rigorous academic grilling for times-table and spelling.

Overall the children had a wonderful experience and learned a lot in readiness for our current topic as well as feeling very grateful that they are not living in 1865, applying for jobs in the mills.

  • Grace Sets New Cross Country Record

Thu 05 Jan 2023 Mrs Allen

A very inspiring and encouraging start to our new term by Grace. She ran the three laps of the school cross country course in record time - 9 minutes 37 seconds. Grace is now the current record holder for the girls' cross country at school.

She has recently overcome injury and this was a fantastic example of endurance which is this term's core value.

Congratulations - from Mrs Allen and Mr McGrath.
