Do you struggle to find After School Childcare that suits the needs of you and your children?
I have run the Out Of School Childcare provision at Wedmore First School Academy for the last 12 years. Children from Hugh Sexey have always attended either collected from school by us or arriving on their school buses.
The number of children coming to us has increased over the last couple of years and so we would now like to investigate if there is a need for a separate After School Club run at Hugh Sexey.
Initial thoughts are that it would open from the end of school until 5.30pm each school day. We would provide the children with age appropriate informal indoor and outdoor activities including use of the school ICT room. Appropriate staff would care for the children and implement and supervise all activities. The cost would be around £7.50 per day and would include refreshments at the start of the afternoon.
We would like to hear from you if you think an After School Provision at Hugh Sexeys is something you would use for your children. In addition we would be interested in any ideas you have about what should be provided at an After School Club for children of this age.
Please e-mail your thoughts and register your interest with us by e-mailing Sharon at:

We will keep you posted about the outcome... Watch This Space!

Event/Activity: Faraday Challenge Day
On Tuesday 12 January 36 x year 7 children from Hugh Sexey took part in a Faraday Challenge Day, run by the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology). They are partnered with the BBC using the new device that is part of their make-it digital programme. The device is called the micro-bit. It is an incredibly new device, so new that we were using prototypes! It is designed to get younger children more interested in technology and engineering. It was a very exciting day that gave us an insight of the job that our country’s engineers do! We were in 6 x teams of 6. We were asked to come up with an idea that uses the micro bit in everyday life. The winners were the Functionals and their school and the score has been put on the national leader board. That means that they could have a chance at entering another competition. All the teams tried really hard and produce some amazing products. We hope that we could do this again, since everyone really enjoyed it.

Event/Activity: Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2015-16
“SHARE PEACE”
Congratulations to Heather for being chosen as the winner of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2015-16 at Hugh Sexey C of E Middle School.
Well done also to the two Runners up: Elisha and Marishelle, and to all of the 140 pupils in Year 8 who took part in this annual competition. The posters are judged on their originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the theme, which this year was “Share Peace”.
Heather was up against stiff competition as there were so many excellent posters, from which the judges had to choose just one winner to go on to the SW District level of the contest. The judges were particularly impressed with the thoughtful way in which pupils had expressed the theme.
Lion Janet Clark, president of Cheddar Vale Lions Club, who sponsors the peace poster contest, presented the winning students with their certificates and prizes during KS3 Assembly on 15 January.

Event/Activity: Clive Pig, storytelling & drama workshop
On the 12 and 13 of January we were visited by Clive Pig, an amazing story teller to tell us stories about the Mayan life. He told us about how the Mayans thought the world came to be, and then he told us about two twins who played a Mayan game called Pok-ta-Pok. The last story of the day was about a singing toad who lived by a well. My personal favourite was the toad story.
The next day we did a workshop in the drama studio where we had to act out facts about the Mayans, he told us how they lived and that the babies had a piece of wood on their forehead for a year so their forehead was level with their nose.
At the end of the day he told us a story about a chocolate boy. I really enjoyed listening to Clive Pig.

Event/Activity: Zone Squad
Here’s the latest from my Zone Squad meetings. We were at Poole Harbour on 9 and 10 January improving our race starts and ‘sailing and bailing’. We were on the water for about 10 hours over the two days. On the first day we had to come in early as the wind was too strong, but on the second day we didn’t have enough wind to begin with. At the end of day two, the wind picked up so we could do a few more races.
So in the end we got our practice and I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait for the next Zone Squad meeting at Weymouth National Sailing Academy in 3 weeks.

Event/Activity: Somerset County Youth Concert Band
Alex and Ben performed in their first concert with the Somerset County Youth Concert Band on 21st December. The band played at the impressive new MacMillan Theatre at Bridgwater College after an intensive three day course of rehearsals. The programme was very varied with music from Sibelius and Holst to Disney and Blues Brothers! The band play to a high standard and the excellent performance reflected the musicianship and technical virtuosity of it's members . The next concert follows an Easter course and is highly recommended!
Just before the concert, Ben heard that he had achieved a Distinction for his Grade 6 Clarinet exam taken that week. Well done Ben.

Event/Activity: Somerset Schools Cup
On Wednesday 16th December, the year seven and eight hockey teams qualified for the finals day at MiIlfield having won their pool based at Crispin. They all chose to miss the cinema trip which sadly fell on the same day.
Arriving at 9.30 sharp the year eight and seven played the semi final both versus rivals Fairlands.
The year seven won their match 3-1 and therefore made it to the finals tournament.
The year eights played really well but unfortunately Fairlands scored the winning goal in the last moments to secure their place in the finals tournament.
Year seven went onto play Sexeys, Haygrove and Bishop Fox school and won the tournament on goal difference.
Well done to all players and to all players who have regularly attended Thursday Hockey Club.
