    Year 7 Football vs Millfield

Hugh Sexey came from behind to beat a very spirited Millfield team in a classic encounter. With the A team playing on the adjacent pitch this fixture Millfield 2 - 4 Hugh Sexey provided a perfect opportunity for other players to show their quality. Riley was given the role of Captain, and although it was a new role for him, he revelled in the responsibility. He lead by example throughout and kept the players focused. Jamie was a stand out player in goal, commanding his area and stopping what looked like certain goals. Finley was a great focus for the team with his tireless running pegging the Millfield defence back. It was Finley who opened the scoring with an emphatic strike bursting the net and the jubilant player reeling away to share the moment with his team mates. Millfield responded with two quick fire goals but Finley was equal to it with another clinical strike and equally impressive show of euphoria to compliment it. However, if the crowd thought that Finley's goal and celebration combination was impressive they were about to have their minds opened. Tom, who had been a busy and industrious figure throughout, neatly turned in a rebounded shot into the net to allow Hugh Sexey to take the lead. First he sprinted down the touchline, he then jumped in the air and punched the sky, then he leapt up and did a statue pose which he then turned into a pirouette and Ronaldo esque pose. it was first class, and brought a smile to everyone's face. Charlie then put the game beyond doubt with a neat finish from a corner.

It was so pleasing to see the players so happy after the game and we are most grateful to Millfield for hosting us.

Final score: Millfield 2 - 4 Hugh Sexey

In another match against Millfield, the year 7 boys football team learned some valuable lessons against a well drilled and ambitious Millfield side. Whilst the score line was very one sided in Millfield's favour the players should take great pride in how they responded in the second half. After a very tough first half I was pleased to be greeted by an upbeat group at half time. Will remarked that there were lessons to be learnt and that the team should aim for a better second half. That materialised, with Hugh Sexey doing everything but scoring and limiting Millfield to 1 goal from a corner. Will played one of his best games, in what was challenging circumstances and Alex and Ellis continued to front up and show real spirit against notably larger opposition.

If we can learn and grow from this it will be a very valuable experience.

    Final score: 8-0 to Millfield

  • Cook serves up a goal feast

Mon 25 Feb 2019 Mr McGrath

A hat trick by striker Noah was the main talking point in a well matched game against Fairlands. The visiting side got the opening goal with a wonderful strike from distance. The first half was often a case of two sides trying to find their rhythm. Hugh Sexey tried to play positive football but often got caught trying to hit the ball long - a style that doesn't suit our players. Michal, Charles and Charlie formed a very potent back three with all three offering different attributes and restricting the Fairlands attack to long range shots. Eventually Hugh Sexey equalised with Noah showing great persistence to bundle the ball into the back of the net. At half time Lewis and Zach were introduced with an adaption being made to the formation. This allowed Toby, a bright spark throughout the game, greater licence to get forward and along with Archie and Charlie they were able to get beyond the lines and stretch Fairlands more frequently. We then scored again with great interplay allowing Noah a neat tap in. He then wrapped up proceedings finishing clinically from a 1 on 1.

It was very pleasing to see the boys so excited by the fixture and  playing with such vigour.

Many thanks to Fairlands for a lovely game.

    Final score: 3-1 to HSMS

  • Engineering Workshop for Year 7s

Mon 25 Feb 2019 Miss Latti

On Wednesday 13th February a team of Engineers from the University of the West of England came to visit a group of Year 7 pupils and Philippa Griffiths (8AMW) as part of the Secondary Engineer Leaders Award competition. The team of engineers are also working on building a prototype of Philippa’s winning invention (RLBS – Red Line Braking System) from the competition last year. During the visit pupils learnt about the job role of an engineer and the different types of Engineering e.g. mechanical, electrical and robotics. Pupils were given the opportunity to work on an engineering challenge where they were required to work in small teams as Software and Electrical Engineers to programme a microchip to light up multiple LEDs. The engineers spent time showcasing the stages of building Philippa’s prototype and discussed with her ways in which she felt the product could be developed before its unveiling in June. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves and found it to be challenging as they learnt how to work as an engineer whilst developing problem-solving and team work skills.

  • Year 7s have the Blue's

Wed 13 Feb 2019 Mr McGrath

The year 7 team played 3 games of the Mid Somerset Cup last week. The home game aginst a well organised Wells Blue side was an exciting encounter with Hugh Sexey getting the opening goal against the run of play. Zack hit a cross come shot and after several ricochets the ball found its way into the back of the net. Hugh Sexey continued to press with Ellis and Nathan providing good outlets down the flanks. As the game wore on Oliver also ventured forward more freely, providing an overlap on numerous occasions. Unfortunately we just couldn't get the crucial second goal.

Wells Blue were a good team with a number of dangerous players. Our defence did a superb job of steming the flow of their attack but after a number of desperate last gasp saves by Kaden, a goal for them seemed more and inevitable; it eventually happened with the ball squirming in at the near post. With Wells Blue's confidence high they continued to push and twice Hugh Sexey nearly stole a goal on the break. First Will was just a fraction too far away at the far post and then the keeper frantically clearing the ball off his line after a superb attack. With seconds remaining Wells Blue got a corner and from the resulting play their big centre back grabbed a goal from a dangerous in swinging ball. Heart ache at the death but a game that showed a lot about the identy of the team and reinforced that football is a game based around small margins. Final score 2-1 to Wells Blue.

  • A Thorne in their side

Wed 13 Feb 2019 Mr McGrath

Hugh Sexey went to Crispin to play two games of the Mid Somerset cup. The first game was against Crispin and it proved to be a nail biting encounter. The first 5 minutes was a case of both players finding their feet. The ball was frequently pumped back and forth with little thought of playing constructive football. At times it looked more like an Aussie rules match as the ball was hammered high into the sky. The defenders and goal keepers had to be on red alert and both sides nearly conceded goals from this unplanned tactic. it took an acrobatic save from Kaden for Hugh Sexey and a number of fine reads from Crispin to ensure that the scores were level. Eventually both teams started to find their way

. When Dennis entered the fray he brought a little more control through the middle and Dylan showed real assurance throughout. Instead of smashing the ball up field he looked to release his wider defenders or play the easy ball to Hugo, who has grown in his midfield role. Hugh Sexey started to assume control of possession and territory but just could not get a gaol. The Crispin keeper was on fine form, but we were also guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net rather than shot on sight. Agisnt the run of play Crispin got a goal after a rare lapse in concentration.

The instructions at half time were simple. Commit more players forward and shoot when the opportunity is there. Hugh Sexey certainly took this into account with Nathan, Dennis and Ellis all constantly threatening the Crispin goal. Alex had a rasping drive tipped over the bar as we poured forward time and time again. Sadly we just could not get the ball in the net and Crispin got the win. Final score 1-0 to Crispin.

  • Dennis the Menace

Wed 13 Feb 2019 Mr McGrath

The last game was against St Dunston's and after we had played so much football I was worried the players may be a bit tired both physically and mentally. I shouldn't have worried. It looked as if we were only warming up. The back 3 of Issac, Dylan and Riley installed confidence in the boys and allowed the likes of Dennis, Nathan, Ellis and Zack to stay high and wide. Dylan was playing some marvellous football and got rave reviews from the Crispin coach. Finally Dennis broke the deadlock after sustained pressure. With the players a little more relaxed we started to see more flow to the play with Will keeping things simple but moving the ball forward every time he had possession. Another goal quickly followed although the jury is still out as to who got the final touch.

Many thanks to Crispin and well done to all involved.

    Final score: 2-0 to HSMS

  • SSAA Junior Cross Country Championships

Tue 12 Feb 2019 Mr Jackson

Runners from Years 7 and 8 took part in the Somerset Schools Junior Cross Country Championships in Taunton.

There were top 20 placings for Hannah, Olivia, Katie, Finley, Ben and Joel; four of whom were representing Hugh Sexey at cross country for the first time.

Our best placed team were the Year 8 Boys (Ben, Joel, Luc, Alex and Henry) who came third.

    Well done everyone.

  • Great Scott!

Tue 12 Feb 2019 Mr McGrath

Alex is the goal hero as Hugh Sexey over power a physical Millfield side.

The year 8 development side put in a great performance of flowing football against a team who relied on brawn and industry. Joel, making his debut for the School side, was a pillar of strength at the back and did not give an inch to Millfield's onslaught of long balls and direct tactics. When Hugh Sexey had the ball they looked dangerous and tried to play positive football on what was a rather muddy pitch come the end. Oscar showed his experience and helped guide the team around the park. His range of passing was very adept and he found a number of ways of releasing the likes of Henry and Louis, who helped to provide the team with width. Despite a number of shots raining in on the home teams goal, Hugh Sexey managed to keep a clean sheet at the break. A lot of credit must go to Liam who selflessly put the team before himself and ensured all of the players played a big part. On the pitch Liam was a commanding presence. A Jack Russell in the tackle, and composed when in possession of the ball. Often he played the simple ball and allowed the players further up the pitch to show their creativity. As the game wore on gaps emerged in the tired defence and ALex was twice the beneficiary. Once from a rebounded shot and the other from a set play. He put in a star turn and also showed a willingness to run the channels and drop deep for the ball.

  • Annual Netball Competition vs Fairlands

Mon 11 Feb 2019 Mrs Allen
Mrs. Scott and myself travelled to Cheddar for our annual netball competition against Fairlands.
All four year groups were represented. It was particularly exciting for our year fives to travel to an away fixture..
The key stage two teams played first. Year five have been training Wednesday lunch time. This showed as their skills were very obvious. Some great play from all the team who went onto win
4-0 The year six team also played well and under their coach Mrs.Scott performed with confidence and flair. They also won . The score was 7-3
Year seven and eight have been working hard on a Wednesday night and I was most impressed  with the calm approach the year seven . Beautiful controlled play with some accurate shooting meant the final score was 14-1 in Hugh Sexey's favour. The year eights were looking forward to this as many of the players are friend with the Fairlands girls out of school.
A rather physical game ( the influence of girls rugby creeping in.)
The final score was 5-7 Fairlands.

    A very enjoyable tournament.
