Mon 29 Apr 2019 Mr Cocking

He has had a very successful year playing for Bristol in the National Age Groups coming 4th in the Country and representing Gloucestershire in the inter county Championships.

Aaron has also represented the South West region for the last two years.  The Photos below are from this years inter-regionals where he represented the South West in the U15 age group. • Year 6 Rugby vs Brent Knoll

Mon 29 Apr 2019 Mr McGrath

The year 6 boys enjoyed a high paced tag rugby match against Brent Knoll in the impressive surroundings of Burnham Rugby club. Up until now we haven't played many competitive games with Brent Knoll and this fixture provided a lovely gateway for what will hopefully be a regular occurrence. The games were played in a great spirit with both teams showing good understanding and seeming to develop as the games wore on. Liam profited from the slick handling of Hugh Sexey by running in 4 slick tries. Rowan and Johnny also ran in good scores out wide after crisp handling. Johnny showing excellent juggling skills in the process. All of our players showed a real ability and demonstrated the core skills of running, catching, drawing and passing very well. They often made it look easier than it actually is. Ab was very impressive throughout. Often he took the ball right to the line and fired out sharp short passes once he had drawn the defenders. This helped unlock space for the likes of Henry, Charlie and Will. Indeed with Hugh Sexey throwing the ball about with such vim and vigour the Brent Knoll players often followed the perceived line of the ball and succumbed to some well timed dummies in midfield. Will and Henry doing this very well. Finley acted as a playmaker throughout - he showed an excellent range of passing skills and demonstrated a great understanding of how to put others into space. He was unlucky not to score on a number of occasions, but made a great contribution. The Brent Knoll players were not short on quality themselves and often the score tipped back and forth.

It was great to go to Burnham and a lovely opportunity to make a new connection with another School within our trust.

  • Somerset Inter-Area Cross Country Match

Thu 25 Apr 2019 Mr Jackson

Following excellent performances during the Mendip Cross Country League, four runners from Years 5&6 were selected to represent Mendip in a Somerset inter-area cross country match.

Ruby, Charlie, Fynn and Lewis ran against the best of their age group from across the county at the event in the recreation ground in Yeovil.

Our runners were fantastic.  Ruby, Charlie and Lewis each finished in the top 12 (in the county!) and all four received gold medals as Mendip were the winning team in both the girls and boys races for Years 5&6.

A fitting finale to the cross country season from our top runners.

  • Year 8 STEM Challenge Day with EDF

Thu 25 Apr 2019 Miss Latti
On Tuesday 23rd April Year 8 pupils participated in an exciting STEM Challenge day in association with EDF Energy. The day enabled pupils to learn more about careers within the STEM industries and further develop their practical skills within Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Pupils were set the challenge of working in teams of 5 to design and make a vehicle to be fired up a ramp using compressed air. The vehicle had to support the weight of an egg and prevent it from breaking when it impacted and rolled along the floor. To win the challenge, the vehicle had to travel the furthest distance from the launch ramp without the egg cracking. After all the teams manufactured their product they had to test how safely it could transport an egg up the ramp without breaking. Teams were awarded marks for teamwork, budget spent, distance the vehicle travelled and quality of design. Congratulations to Alex Richardson (8DJ), Innes Oliver (8DJ), Gabriel Wheeler (8DJ), Scarlett Knight (8DJ) and Ella Woodcock(8DJ) for winning the STEM Challenge day overall! The judges commended the pupils on their excellent design idea and teamwork skills. Well done on your fantastic achievement.
  • Holly donates to RSPCA

Thu 25 Apr 2019 Mrs Johnston

We really have been bowled over this weekend by the kindness and generosity of the younger generation. Today 11 year old Holly came in to our RSPCA centre in Brent Knoll to donate a wonderful box of homemade blankets and toys for the animals! Elderly Labrador Roxy was on hand to receive the wonderful donation and quickly claimed one of the toys to play with in reception. Holly and her dad then went on a VIP tour of the centre to see the work we do.

Thank you Holly from all the animals 🐰🐶🐱 🐾

  • Burnham beach clean

Tue 23 Apr 2019 Burnham Magazine

Three Burnham-On-Sea youngsters who are so worried about the environment that they launched their own campaign to ‘save Somerset’ have held a beach clean in the town this week.

They were so shocked to learn about global warming, deforestation, fossil fuels, pollution and litter that they wanted to ‘do their bit’ in helping tackle the issues locally.

Ben Whitrow, with school friends Kayden Wright and Will Creswick, launched a campaign called ‘Save Somerset’ to help clean up Burnham and raise awareness of the dangers of plastic pollution following an assembly on the topic at their school, Hugh Sexey’s.

They have planned to organise regular clean-ups and during the last few weeks they have worked hard in producing posters which have been put up around their school and fliers encouraging more of their friends to get involved.

On Wednesday, the trio was joined by school friends Oli Wollon and Jemima Seagrove to carry out a Burnham beach clean, focussing on the areas either side of Burnham Pavilion.

Ben’s mother, Louise Whitrow, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Armed with litter pickers, gloves and black bin bags, they collected rubbish, plastic and glass which they then took home to recycle. They were all surprised at the amount they collected which just highlighted the need for their campaign.”

“The boys intend to carry out more clean-ups this year and are keen to not just focus on the beach but also local play areas as well as Apex Park.”

“They will continue to promote their cause at school and hope the number of friends wishing to take part will grow!”

  • Year 3/4 Dance Schools Festival - Thursday 4th April 2019

Fri 05 Apr 2019 Mr Waterfield

On Thursday we welcomed ten students from each of the first schools to Hugh Sexey's for the yearly annual dance festival.

For the first time ever the dance festival was led by our Year 8 sports leaders. They started with a warm up session, which included sporting fitness moves such as star jumps, squats, etc.. They then performed  a dance they had developed in a short space of time.

After their performance they split all the students into groups of 7/8; each group had to create a dance routine based around Olympics themes, such as running, football, archery, boxing, etc..

They only had 30 minutes to come up with their dance routine, and the tricky part was to make sure all the students were involved and were able to follow and perform the rountine.

After they had practiced, they all then went up onto the school 'stage' and performed in front of the other students as well as parents.

It was lovely to see a lot of parents watching, and was particularly pleasing to see the quality of dance the sports leaders manage to get the students to perform.  Well done to all the first school students; they all engaged well and participated with a smile on their faces. Well done to the 7 sports leaders below - you were all superb, a credit to the sports industry and our school.

    Mr Waterfield
