Coventry Ricoh Stadium
The combined year five and six girls' football team travelled to Coventry this Saturday to represent school in the Danone Nations Cup. It has been a long journey for the team and they have consistently well to get this far in the cup.
A bright sunny morning , the team travelled by mini bus , in a convoy with parents to Coventry. Arriving at the impressive stadium , everyone was allocated a wrist band and as a group of players and supporters we set up camp in the stand.
The girls were disappointed that captain Edie P was poorly on the day as she has been a very influential part of the team. Maddie D who played with great skill and leadership took over the role of captain.
The team played in pool A against three other schools. The kick off was delayed , which was a shame as it was hot . However , despite the setbacks , the team got off to a good start with 0-0 draw against Gerrards Cross C of E School. Aida R took over the Goalkeeper shirt and showed great skill in defending. Cerys W played very well in this match despite discomfort from a previous injury.
After some great advice from parent, Mr. Saxon the team went onto play even better in their second match against St. Bernard's Catholic Primary School . An early goal from striker , Katie R meant the team spirit and standard lifted.
Olivia F and Katie H followed the ball with determined tenacity even though the sun was hot. Ella S marked beautifully in defence. Anika B played with spirit and determination and Ella H showed great potential in midfield . The other team scored a late equaliser in the second half. After two matches the girls were in a good position in their pool.
The third and final match against Ponteland Academy was challenging. The opposition was strong and scored early. Our girls showed their fighting spirit and didn't give up despite finally losing this qualifying game3-0. This meant that today , the team did not make the semi- finals stage.
In true football tradition the team lined up in the tunnel and were each given a medal for reaching the Nationals.
A very memorable day. A first for the girls from Hugh Sexey and exciting potential for the future of girls' football. Well done indeed for getting so far in this prestigious cup.
Many thanks to coaches, Mr. Lamb and Mr. Waterfield and to all the families for their dedicated support.
But without the girls' skill, hard work and enthusiasm it wouldn't have happened.
Well done.
“The Future of Peace”
Congratulations to Matilda H whose poster has been chosen as the winner of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2017-18 at Hugh Sexey C of E Middle School. Well done also to the two Runners up, Suzanna F and Beth W and to all of the pupils in Year 8 who took part in this annual competition. The posters are judged on their originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the theme, which this 30th Anniversary Year was “The Future of Peace”. The judges were particularly impressed with the many thoughtful ways in which pupils had expressed the theme. The President of Cheddar Vale Lions Club presented Matilda, Suzanna and Beth with their certificates and prizes at an assembly in the New Year.
Matilda went on to achieve ‘Highly Commended’ in the SW District level of the contest and was awarded another prize at the Lions District Convention at Croyde Bay. Her poster will also be included in a exhibition at Exeter Guildhall on 14th July during the Lord Mayor’s Coffee Morning (10am-2pm)
All of the posters entered for the contest by students at Hugh Sexey C of E Middle School are now on display in Cheddar Library until the middle of June.
Well done to the boy's tennis team, who played with real spirit in a defeat by Millfield at Hugh Sexey. It was the first time we had hosted a tennis fixture in the LTA and the 5-8 seeded boys played very well against well coached opposition. Number 5 seed Lewis R played very well in his game against a tricky, belligerent and skilful opponent. The Millfield played just having more variety with his range of shots to force crucial errors. Number 7 seed Henry R put in a strong showing against a sprightly opponent. The Spanish player from Millfield was a delightful baseline player and the two all action styles made for a thrilling spectacle. Henry had to work very hard as he was frequently moved around the court by the experienced and skilful Millfield student.
Robert F had a power packed game against an imposing serve/volley opponent. The Player from Hong Kong had a monstrous serve and Robert did a sterling job of keeping the game competitive throughout. The Head of tennis at Millfield prep remarked that her players were performing well above themselves as a result of the challenge put forward by the Hugh Sexey boys. James F played very well throughout. He has potential in this sport and with more practice could pose a serious threat.
In the doubles matches the boys all performed well but the Millfield players were more drilled in their positioning and greater experience allowed them to communicate more effectively.
Overall it was a great experience for the players and will hopefully lead to more tennis fixtures.
Commiserations to the Girls Under 13s Cricket team, who lost by one 1 to Fairlands in the Chance to Compete Super 8s. With Chilton Trinity unable to raise a side it was a one game affair with both sides performing well. Izzy C had a strong day with the bat scoring 7, and Megan R put in a solid showing on her first game for the school. Many thanks for filling in at the last minute. The shortened game does require the players to be a little more ambitious in their approach and ultimately we did not do that until the 6th over.
It looked as though we may have been able to hold onto the game with a fine bowling order from Ella H and Milly T, but the Fairlands entering bats woman hit a stunning 4 to seal the game with 1 bowl remaining.
Congratulation to Fairlands and thanks for attending. Best of luck in the next round.
All the feeder first Schools came to Hugh Sexey's to compete in an Athletics Festival delivered by our Year 8 Sports Leaders. They did a range of different running track events, 80m sprints, relays, and hurdles.
The Year 8 Sports Leaders ran the festival and did an fantastic job, it all ran smoothly and all the pupils had great fun.
The year seven pupils had a flying start to their French trip on Tuesday when they had the challenge of buying their own lunch on the market at Villedieu les Poeles, followed by a picnic and a visit to La Saffrie goat farm. On Wednesday, everyone did activities - breadmaking, archery and orienteering, while today we have been to Mont St. Michel and the managed the famous walk across the bay. We can’t believe the week has gone so fast - tomorrow we visit the Bayeux Tapestry before catching the ferry back home. A bientôt!
