  • Year 6 STEM Workshop

Mon 18 Oct 2021 Miss Latti

On Wednesday 13th October the Science and DT Faculty invited 30 Year 6 pupils to participate in an exciting STEM workshop which was hosted by a company called STEMworks on behalf of the National Grid.

During the first part of the workshop pupils learnt how the National Grid supply energy to customers and communities and how they are working hard to decarbonise the energy system so that it is net zero by 2050. Pupils learnt how Hinckley Point C will be used to supply and power electricity across the South West region upon its completion in 2026. Pupils developed their knowledge on how electricity is generated through nuclear, hydro, wind, solar and biomass.

During the second part of the workshop pupils applied their theory knowledge by creating a basic circuit using a battery, buzzer, red and black wire and a terminal block. Pupils then tested a range of materials to identify if they were a conductor or insulator. At the end of this activity pupils learnt aluminium foil, copper, mild steel paper clip and graphite were all conductors as they allow electricity to pass through easily. Plastic, wood and glass did not allow electricity to pass through them because they are good insulators.

During the final part of the workshop pupils were set the challenge of applying all that they had learnt by designing and making a buzz wire game that was powered by a basic electric circuit. This enhanced their practical making and problem-solving skills as they were required to design their buzz wire game by including circuit diagrams and electronic component symbols. Pupils then had to demonstrate skill in using a range of hand tools and equipment safely to make their buzz wire game. Overall pupils commented on how much fun they had improving their knowledge and understanding of electricity in a theoretical and practical way.

During the Summer term pupils will be given another opportunity to apply their learning from this workshop on the topic of electricity within their Science and DT units.

They were competing against 19 other schools from Somerset and Bristol.

Elijah, Fynn, Jack, Josh, Oscar and Zach all gave their best.  Oscar was our first runner to complete the 2.75 kilometre course with Fynn just behind.

  • Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League - Race 1

Wed 13 Oct 2021 Mr Jackson

    Years 5&6 cross country - Race 1

15 runners from Years 5 & 6 represented Hugh Sexey in the first race (of five) of the Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League.  The first race was a 2 kilometre course at Tor Leisure in Glastonbury.

Owing to 2020 to being, well, 2020, all 15 were making their debuts in Hugh Sexey colours.  It was a fantastic event with hundreds running and lots of spectators too.  Well done to all our 15 who were anxious but eager to run and all gave their best.

Our runners were Bo, Libby, Lulu, Meghan, Poppy G, Poppy S, Adam, Henry, Josh and Noah from Year 6 and Bella, Bethany, Euan, Laurence and Tristan from Year 5.

With no previous experience to go by, I was very pleasantly surprised to see Poppy S and Libby leading after the first lap, only for them to be even more amazing in the second lap and stretch their leads further.  Poppy finished first and Libby second.

In the boys race, our first two home were Noah and Euan who both ran very strong and sensibly paced races.

Thank you to parents who came to support and help and my colleague Mrs Fox for giving up her free time to help and ensure everyone was in the right place at the right time.

  • Year 7 Mixed Football Festival

Tue 12 Oct 2021 Mr McGrath

The year 7 football team enjoyed a fun filled footballing afternoon at Kings Academy. The year 13 pupils arranged a tournament between ourselves and Fairlands with each side playing three games. Their was some superb football on display with George and Nik being voted star players for their respective teams. Sayba, Tilly, Eleanor and Tarlia all put in skilful and courageous performances. Austin was an inspirational leader and Charlie really got the partisan crowd behind him with a spirited performance in goal. All the players should be proud of their contribution. It was a delight to spend the afternoon with them. In the end our two teams finished first and second and returned home with happy memories.

Thanks to Fairlands and Kings for a great afternoon.
