  • U13 Boys Rosslyn Park 7s Tournament - Monday 25th March 2019

Thu 04 Apr 2019 Mr Waterfield

For the first time ever Hugh Sexey U13s boys 7's rugby team entered in the world's biggest schools 7s rugby tournament, at Rosslyn Park in London. The boys and myself have been looking forward to this tournament all year!

We left school at 5.30am In the morning to make the 5 hour journey to London. Our first game was scheduled for 9.20am. We got there in plenty of time to warm up and prepare for a full day of 7s rugby.

The first game was against Ysgol Gyfun Bryn Tawe school (Swansea, Wales). Hugh Sexey's immediately got down to business and starting to play attacking, running rugby which created spaces for our finishers to score.  The game ended 50-5 to Hugh Sexey's. A great start to the tournament.

The second game was against Churcher's College (Petersfield, Hampshire). Churcher's had won their first game and looked to be a strong unit.  Hugh Sexey's game plan was to do the same; to put lots of pressure on them resulting in turn overs enabling us move the ball and score.  Our defence in this game was outstanding.  The finishing score was 35-15 to Hugh Sexey's; both schools played a great game of 7s rugby.

The third game was against Aberdare Community School (Aberdare, Wales) Our spirit and team ethos were on a roll, and the boys powered on to win 40 -0. Our strong breakaway running skills were too much for Aberdare to handle.

The fourth game was vs Fulham Boys School (Fulham, London).  We knew they would be a very tough school to beat as they hadn't lost a game yet in the tournament.  However Hugh Sexey's were rampant; the boys covered the whole field, passing the ball from one side of the pitch to the other  causing havoc for Fulham School. An excellent display of rugby from the Hugh Sexey team saw them finish the game 45-20. This was an outstanding game to watch.

The final game of the day was against Treorchy Comprehensive School (Rhondda, Wales). Kick off was 4.20pm and I honestly thought we would be seeing lots of tired legs. In fact the boys were all up for this last game, and were determined to finish the day on a high. They did exactly that by winning 40-5.

All of the boys were outstanding on the day; this definitely has to be one of the best displays of rugby  I have seen in all my time at Hugh Sexey's as a rugby coach. They played as a team and used their strengths on the pitch well.
Special mentions must go to the following: Will Creaser, for being an excellent captain as well as putting in a superb performance on the pitch.
Kenny Poole, Ben Crook, and Joel Tudor for their strong rugby running and finishing skills - they all had a great eye for the try line all day.
Alex Scott, Luc Griffiths and Jacob Aberdeen who were solid all day in every area of the game, and especially in defence - their tackle rate was superb.
Ollie Spinks, George Spinks, Max Scantlebury and James O'Brien, who are a year younger .  They all showed great promise, and was very pleasing to see them step-up and perform at this high level. Well done guys.
Also to Kyle Downie and Toby Marshall for being great support for the boys on the day.

Well done all of you, it was a day to remember.

  • Girls' County Cup Football

Tue 02 Apr 2019 Mr McGrath

The girls football team travelled to Somerdale Pavillion in Keynsham as Somerset representatives for the Danone Nations cup. It was a beautiful day that was excellently run by the ESFA and showcased a lot of enthusiastic players and exceptional talent.

The first event saw the girls proudly collect their medals for being champions of Somerset. The first game was against Devon and it was clear that both sides were nervous. Hugh Sexey nearly got off to a bad start when Devon shot at goal right from the kick off. Thankfully Katie was equally to it and diverted the danger. As the game grew older the girls started to find their rhythm with both Ella's making good decisions. Abbie and Anika looked bright throughout and had a couple of chances. The game finished 0 - 0 with the girls feeling that it could of gone either way.

The next match saw us up against Wiltshire and we started very brightly. Lucy was a busy influence in midfield and she helped set the tempo. At the back Evie was tenacious whilst also being composed when in possession. After some good play in the midfield Abbie got across her defender to rifle the ball into the net. The game finished with us winning 1 - 0 putting us in a good position before our next game.

Hampshire were our next opponents and they had a little too much quality. Despite our best efforts we lost 2 - 0. Indah and Maddy showed up well in this game and it said a lot for the character of the side that we kept going to the final whistle.

The final game of the group was against the Channel Islands. We both had equal points and recorded identical results against our opponents. THis meant that a draw would result in penalties and a win would send either team through as runner up. We saved this game for our best performance with all of the girls on top form. Anika and Abbie were excellent throughout and Abbie got the first goals after great work by Ella. Late in the game Ella worked a lovely one two and slotted into the corner for a 2- 0 win. This meant that we would face Dorset in the Semi Finals.

It was a proud day for the Dorset school as this was the furthest they had ever progressed in the competition. Their travelling support cheered them on throughout and it was evident that they were a powerful and well drilled side. in the end Dorset emerged victorious and progressed to the finals as deserved winners.

Credit to Hugh Sexey who gave a great account of themselves throughout the day. Many thanks also to the parents who helped contribute to a lovely day.

  • Year 8 Mid Somerset Cup

Tue 02 Apr 2019 Mr McGrath

Hugh Sexey welcomed Wells Blue and Millfield to our grounds for the finals of the mid Somerset cup. Hugh Sexey were the holders of the trophy but this looked a testing day as both sides came with powerful looking sides and Hugh Sexey were missing a few players. A number of the team were also looking a little jaded after a hard 7s competition the day prior.

There can be no excuses in sport however and you have to play with what you have at your disposal. The absence of Will, Oscar and Oli also meant there was a chance for players like Henry, Alex, Liam and Louis to lay down a marker before the Somerset final.

The Wells Blue game was a rather flat match, with both sides playing long ball football for large spells. Wells Blue took the lead in the first half with the striker reacting quickest to a loose ball. When Hugh Sexey did keep the ball on the ground they looked more dangerous and Ben profited from one such attack when he tapped in from close range. With the game heading for penalties neither side looked likely to score and so it went to the dreaded shot out. Credit to Ben, Luke, TJ and Sam for all putting themselves forward and scoring. It is a harsh way for anyone to decide a match and it is understandable why many feel this is an unjust way to determine the score in a school game. Commiserations also for the boys at Wells Blue who were less fortunate. The game could of gone either way and it was a sad way to determine the result.

Hugh Sexey now faced Millfield in the final. We have beaten Millfield earlier in the year but on this day it wasn't to be. We continually tried to bash through their robust defence and didn't have the craft on this day to work around it. It is disappointing for the players but credit to Millfield and well done on being crowned Mid Somerset Champions. It is much deserved and the players should be proud of how they played in the final. Hopefully we will give a much better account of ourselves in the Somerset final.

  • Year 7 Football - Fairlands 2 - 2 Hugh Sexey

Tue 02 Apr 2019 Mr McGrath

The boys football team put in a spirited and disciplined performance in a typically competitive local derby. Will, George and Oli were given starts as a reward for their hard work in training and they didn't disappoint. Will was sprightly down the left hand side and nearly grabbed one of his now customary poachers goals. George slotted into the left back birth and looked very accomplished throughout and Oli looked energetic throughout. The wide pitch suited the lung bursting running of Fin and over the course of the game he tirelessly worked up and down the right flank. Jamie took the number 1 jersey and gave a very commanding performance between the sticks. Fairlands started brightly and it was Jamie's feline like reactions that kept them at bay. As the game settled Hugo and Dennis started to control the midfield battle. Dylan put in another typically brilliant performance at the back. Anticipating danger and then showing the skill to play the ball out of defence. Stone also put in a shift that is now becoming customary. Tough in the tackle and no inch given throughout. Dennis open the scoring at the start of the second half by ghosting into the box and calmly slotting the ball past the onrushing keeper. Moments later Fairlands equalised after neat approach play and a well timed 3rd person run. Hugh Sexey regrouped and after an early cross by Fin was  turned towards goal by Dennis the keeper made an excellent point blank save. Dennis controlled the ricocheting ball beautifully and after juggling it over the defenders head he swiftly volleyed the ball in the top corner for a goal that had shades of Paul "Gazza" Gascoignes famous finish against Scotland at Euro 96. Fairlands continued to press and they eventually profited at the end with an equaliser that gave a fair reflection of an evenly balanced game.

Well done to the year 7 team on what has been a very enjoyable season.
